The first time you visit content on Virtual Text, you'll need to register: Register (free). We'll need a valid e-mail address and you will choose a password. You'll then be able to log-on and visit the Virtual Text web site as often as you like.
We are also happy to offer institutional subscriptions. To enquire about an institutional subscription, send e-mail to vtlicenses@jbpub.com.

The main toolbar is explained and illustrated in the graphic below:
The Section Toolbar holds various functional icons that are explained below.

You can choose one of two ways to view figures in the text. Select your preferred view by clicking the
Views link on the Main Toolbar, or clicking on Current View on any Table of Contents page.
When in the Thumbnail View, you will see thumbnails of the figures in a frame on the right side of the screen.
To view the full-sized figures in a pop-up window, click on either the figure's thumbnail, or click the
link to the figure in the text.
When in the Combined View, figures are embedded in the text, and there is no side frame. You can increase or
decrease the size of these figures by clicking the Smaller Figure or Larger Figure buttons on the Section Toolbar.
You can view the figure in a separate pop-up window by clicking the link embedded in the text.
You can enlarge a figure by dragging and expanding the pop-up figure window.
Close the pop-up window by clicking the Close Window link.
The Virtual Text Slideshow allows you to view chapters by progressing through each of the figures in the chapter. On each slide, you are presented with a figure, its legend, and abridged text from the module.
Click the Slideshow icon
in the Section Toolbar.

Click the Views link in the Main Toolbar. Select the Slideshow option,
then click Save Changes.
Click on the Previous Slide

in the Section Toolbar.

Click on any of the individual Slides represented as boxes in the Section Toolbar:

to toggle display of the abridged text.

Click the Views link in the Main Toolbar. Select the Thumbnail or Combined option, then click Save Changes.

When you click the notepad icon,
, a window pops
up in which you can type your note. (Do not use any HTML in your note.) After you add the note to a paragraph,
it will appear below the paragraph. Your mininotes will be shown to you only, whenever you log in with the same user name and password.
To view all of your notes at once, click the Notes link on the Main Toolbar.
You may edit or delete a note by clicking on the note icon,
, next to the paragraph. Edit the text,

The illustration below demonstrates adding and removing highlights. Note: you can only highlight
one paragraph at a time, and you cannot highlight figure legends.
You can search all Virtual Text modules, figure legends, and references from the Main Toolbar. Type a term into the
search box, then click the search button. The results of the search are shown on the Search Page.
You may enter a single word, a phrase, or a boolean query to perform your search. Here are some examples:
There are three types of search results that are displayed on the search page. Items marked with ¤ require a subscription to be viewed.
You may filter your search results by selecting criteria listed on the left side of the search results page.
You may search for terms that include special characters, such as greek characters, by including the name of the
character enclosed by square brackets. For example, to search for NFκB, enter NF[kappa]B. See
the table below for a listing special characters that are included in the search index.

In the lower left of the Virtual Text homepage, enter the term you wish to look up, then click submit. If there is a match in the Lifescience Glossary, you will see that term and definition appear. You can also look for the term on the Glossary page. If you cannot find a definition, and you feel that the term should be included in our Lifescience Glossary, please contact support.
Click on any bold keyterm in the text to display its definition in a pop-up window.
Click the Glossary icon
in the Section Toolbar at any time to go to the Lifescience Glossary.
